Podcast: Deal of the Century? / Neil Quilliam
Neil Quilliam discusses a U.S.-backed peace agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel as a potential solution to Middle Eastern turmoil.
It’s been an amazing, terrifying eight months in the Middle East. The horror of October 7th; the endless pounding of Gaza ever since; civilian deaths, casualties and lives disrupted, mostly in Gaza but also in Israel, the West Bank, and Lebanon; Red Sea shipping attacks; Iran and Israel’s exchange of massive missile and drone attacks; rising anti-Semitism and growing Israeli isolation around the world. What if it could all be ended by one audacious diplomatic masterstroke?
That sounds too good to be true, but it is exactly what American diplomats are trying to make happen. Their idea is a three-way agreement with a formal U.S. defense guarantee for Saudi Arabia who would sign a peace treaty with Israel (while also rolling back their recently strengthened economic and tech relations with China) who would end the Gaza war and firmly commit to the two-state solution with the Palestinians. In other words, a complete reset of the dynamics of the Middle East.
Fantasy or real possibility? This episode of New Thinking for a New World explores the contours of a possible deal with Neil Quilliam, a British expert on Saudi Arabia and more generally the Arab Gulf, who is a fellow at Chatham House.
Can diplomacy trump hate? Please tell us what you think and leave a comment.

There is only one solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is 75 years old and counting: a viable Palestinian state, but still too may oppose it. Everything else is tried, but ultimately never works.

There has never been such a thing as unbiased news and information. Has anyone ever read a newspaper article covering a topic you were 100% familiar with that was close to accurate? I bet not. Is it therefore not reasonable to believe articles you read that you know nothing about are also inaccurate?

A V LACKING ANALYSIS! Yes China doesnt want to be humiliated again and to be respected. But if you look at the last 30 years China has not just achieved a general economic miracle. It has focussed with extraordinary ambition and systematic thought on more or less every sector of its economy and lifted them from almost nothing to world leading. The only 12 year old BRI road shows an extraordinary amnbition to not only link China to thde world but also to create the most ambitious trading network for the world in arguably the last 1000 years. It wants to lift thge global south as well as itself. So there is a very positive and not just a reactive and idealistic philosophy with both national and global ambition. It does seek a win-win global order as opposed to the US and the West's hegeemonic hierarchical philosophy - we'have to be No I and you natives have to be way down the ladder. We in the West need to understand this philosophy. Any links here welcome

I would argue that time is not on China's side. The reason? Demographics. China already has one of the lowest birth rates in the world and has one of the fastest aging populations (using Chinese data). The medium estimate is that Chinese population will go from 1.4 billion today to ~750 million by 2100. The worst case scenario is where population will be 650 million by 2100. By ~2085 there may be more post-65 pensioners than working age people. Think about the implications of that for a moment. It is hard to see China as the hegemon of the 21st Century with half empty mega cities comprised mostly of pensioners. In drive home the point, the Shanghai Academy of Social Science (a Chinese think tank) says that the 2020 Chinese census overcounted the Chinese population by 100 million (that is the population of many countries!!!!), almost all of whom are under 40 (e.g - reproductive age). Moreover, most of these missing 100 million are women because during One Child most families preferred sons. In the meantime, the population of the USA will increase according the UN estimates from 330 million currently to slightly less than 400 million by 2100. The reason is that the USA is one of the few countries of immigrants (the other countries of immigrants that come to mind are Australia and Canada) and people want to be here because of economic opportunity. The USA already has a younger population on average than China, and this gulf will only get worse with time. I see hard times for China as it struggles with this problem and the myriad of other problems that will afflict it (such as the housing crisis). This will strain resources and provide Beijing with unpleasant choices.

Lars is a wise man. The politicians would be well advised to take note of what he has to say. Why are the working Swedes accepting top pay for 1,000,000 migrants who are not working and may never work? The cost to the working man must be enormous taking into account the cost of their welfare, fraud, and crime and the cost of trying to tackle it. The fear of being called a racist is real and politicians have used this to force through their immigration policies that never had a mandate in the country. In integration, learning the language may be important, but what really matters is that immigrants work, pay taxes, and stay on the right side of the law.

Any country praised as being a democracy means that anything done or written in past belong to the ash heap of history. Any country evading this label means that the past is referenced. The Chinese writing itself could pass as a chip so there should be no surprise.

@@erlindaekvall6229 She's a neo-Cold War warrior. This is classic American right-wing think-tank speak. The Tallberg Foundation's agenda is globalism and Globalization. Stated on their site. The title of the video - "Bad guys" - and the way she lumps various nations under the banner of "autocracies" is devoid of nuance and any genuine understanding of those nations. You cannot pretend that the hand of the CIA playing America's long-game via destabilization of other nations never happened or has magically stopped. It hasn't. And her targeting of Venezuela is pure Americana. The pretence (because it's either pretence or ignorance) that politics is "shaping the world" is disingenuous. Big Money (finance) and multinational business is the driver of Globalization, not politics. It is PAINFUL listening to her nonsense.
